Redbreast Cask Strength

TJ Provost

Normal Redbreast 12 is bottled at 80 proof. Redbreast Cask Strength is bottled at 115 proof. The whiskey is not diluted with water nor chill-filtered. This leaves both a stronger taste profile and slight murkiness in color. Don’t let it scare you though! This bottle is about smooth sipping, not burning your tongue with a high proof.

Redbreast Cask Strength

I live out in the sticks and don’t have access to a good liquor store unless I’m willing drive an hour or so. That means that when I see a bottle I feel like I need to buy it because I’m not sure if I’m going to find it anytime soon again. I was with my brother when I saw this bottle of Redbreast Cask Strength. His reaction was shock. He drinks beer, so a $100 price tag was just crazy for him. He’s not a whiskey snob (that’s what my wife calls me) but I had to get it when I saw it. I should have gotten two bottles, because now that I’ve tried it, I know I’m going to want more.

The Nose

The nose on this Redbreast 12 Cask Strength is deep and rich. There is a hint of malt just under rich dark fruits which is perfectly balanced against the vanilla from the bourbon barrels. I can sit and sniff this dram all day. It is just as good as the sip. If you want to up your Nose game, this is a great bottle to appreciate. Pour a dram into a Glencairn Whisky Glass and enjoy.

The Palate

The mouth feel is crisp and clean. The front of the tongue is sweetness that immediately turns to dryness and fruitiness that finishes with a charred oak from the time spent in the bourbon barrels that coasts to a very subtle smokiness. It is complex and lovely. It is not for new drinkers, or at least I don’t think most new Whiskey drinkers will appreciate it, but I could be wrong.

The Score

This cask strength Redbreast is all the goodness of Redbreast 12 but concentrated and powerful, but in a refined, balanced way that really just hits it out of the park.

This Redbreast Cask Strength is all the things I love about Redbreast 12, without the overly wooded notes from Redbreast 15, on steroids.

Redbreast Cask Strength scores a 97/100, making it the all time best whiskey I’ve ever had, and it earned every point.

Deep amber with just a touch of murkiness.

Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey

TJ Provost

Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey is a 50/50 blend of malt and grain whiskies. The mix contain a majority of 4 year old grain whiskey blended with 7 year old malt whiskey. After aging in bourbon barrels two whiskies are blended and finally finished for 6 months in ex-Flor de Caña rum casks.

The Nose

The nose of Teeling Small Batch hints at deeper levels, but doesn’t quite get all the way there. There are ripe fruits that ebbs and flows with each sniff. It would have been more enchanting but the grain whiskey washes out a lot of the notes of the malt whiskey. A buddy gifted me these Irish Tuath Glasses and I have to say they are perfect to sip a bit of Irish Whiskey from.

The Palate

The palate is clean with no oils. The front of my tongue appreciates some sweetness and malt that turns to a hint of leather on the mid tongue. The funk left on my tongue cost this whiskey some points.

The Score

The blend of grain to malt whiskey might just be too heavily weighted to the grain whiskey for me to enjoy this. I feel that the grain whiskey washes out a lot of what I like in Irish Whiskey. There is just a bit of funk hiding in this whiskey where those two blends just don’t quite go together 100%.

I still enjoyed sipping it, but I kept thinking about the $40 price tag. Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey scored a 70/100, making it just barely Sip Worthy. The real issue with the price is that I scored Paddy’s Old Irish Whiskey the same 70/100, and I can get it for $20 a bottle.

  • There are some nice sweet and malt flavors hiding in there.

Cons

  • At $40 a bottle I can get more value by buying Paddy’s Old Irish Whiskey.
  • There is just a little roughness in the middle of the sip that I couldn’t stop appreciating.

Whiskey Dreams – The Temple Bar Irish Whiskey

I will always grab a bottle of Irish Whiskey I’ve never had before. Unlike bourbons, which have dozens of new bottles to taste every month, a new Irish Whiskey is much less common. Sadly, the bottles I haven’t tried also tend to get more expensive.

So when I saw this bottle of The Temple Bar Irish Whiskey on the shelf I immediately picked it up.

The Nose

The nose on The Temple Bar Irish Whiskey is quite enjoyable. There is a nice mixture of sweetness and cinnamon that blends with the malt and spice. It all comes together in a lovely nose that has a lot of subtle notes in it.

The Palate

After the nose, I was really looking forward to the first sip of The Temple Bar Irish Whiskey. The big question on my mind was, did I find a competitor to Red Breast 12?

The first sip of The Temple Bar Irish Whiskey was a little bit of a letdown after how much I enjoyed the nose. There are hints of leather and malt on that first touch of the tongue, which quickly turns to wood notes on the mid tongue before becoming a bit astringent on the finish. That finish is what really hurt The Temple Bar Irish Whiskey for me. The finish is really sharp and not as balanced as I’d like.

The Score

I’m giving The Temple Bar Irish Whiskey a 40/100. The nose was wonderful but the sip was a bit of a let down.

Whiskey Dreams – Proclamation Irish Whiskey

Proclamation Irish Whiskey has some big statements to live up to. Just look at how Historian, author and publisher Mícheál Ó Doibhilín is trying to set my expectations:

“We wanted to celebrate Ireland’s independent spirit through a quality Irish whiskey, one that also tells the story of some of the unsung heroes of this time. Proclamation Blended Irish Whiskey pays tribute to the three printers of the Proclamation, William O’Brien, Michael Molloy and Christopher Joseph Brady and acknowledges the important role they played during a hugely significant time in Irish history.”

That is a lot to live up to for a blended whiskey in the $30 realm. Let’s see how well it does.

The Nose

Proclamation is quite pleasant on the nose. There are sweet notes that hint at butter cookies that turns ever so subtlety to leather.

The Palate

The mouth feel is clean. The first thing I appreciate is that sweetness but it quickly turns to leather and just a hint of tannins from the time spent in the barrel. The distiller says they blend a “touch of sherry-finished malt” to the whiskey and I do appreciate it at the finish. There is just a touch of dryness.

Overall Proclamation Irish Whiskey is smooth and has a nice mouth feel. I enjoyed the touch of dryness from the sherry, but the finish trails off into leather that just kind of hangs out. It’s not bad, it just seems to have a single note that it keeps playing.

Overall I’m giving Proclamation Irish Whiskey a 44/100. There are two primary reasons. The first is that the whiskey doesn’t have a lot of complexity. Its nice, and its smooth, but it just doesn’t offer a lot of body. The second is that I can get a bottle of Jameson Irish Whiskey for a few dollars cheaper, and it scored a 75/100.

The leather on the finish of Proclamation really made me want to add ice to it, and not to open it up. Given the price, I’d just buy a bottle of Jameson next time.

Pros

  • Very smooth.
  • Perfect for new Whiskey Drinkers.
  • The touch of sherry adds a nice bit of dryness to the finish.

Cons

  • No real depth to the flavors.
  • Really has one note. Its a nice note, but it doesn’t hold my interest for long.
  • The leather on the finish lasts too long.

Whiskey Dreams – Redbreast Lustau Edition

Redbreast 12 Year is one of my all time favorite Whiskeys. After I discovered it I drank two bottles in three weeks with a little bit of help. I have unashamedly fallen in love with Redbreast so I was super excited to try the Redbreast Lustau Edition.

Let’s first break down what it takes to make a bottle of Redbreast Lustau Edition. The whiskey itself is aged for between 9 to 12 years in a combination of Bourbon and Oloroso Sherry casks. The bottle doesn’t carry an actual age statement but I’m going to trust the rumors and my taste buds on this one.

Redbreast Lustau Edition

The Nose

Redbreast Lustau has the base attributes of Redbreast 12 on the nose but then adds in a bit more fruit. It’s not overpowering, but there is a bit more honey and apple on the nose.

The Palate

The mouth feel is clean and crisp. The first touch on my tongue is malt and a touch of dryness that rapidly turns to honey and sweetness on the mid tongue. That sweetness changes to a delicious dryness that really highlights the time spent in the Bodegas Lustau Sherry Casks. There are times I just crave the way this bottle lingers on the finish.

The Score

There are times when I just crave a dram of this Redbreast Lustau. That opening malt and sweetness combined with the dry finish that lingers just the right amount of time earns this Redbreast Lustau a score of 92/100.

Pros

  • The nose hints at Redbreast’s underlying richness while benefitting from the fruitiness from the Sherry.
  • Reminds me of Redbreast.
  • Obviously, it has Redbreast’s deepness as it first washes over your tongue.

Cons

  • If you don’t like Sherry you may not find this bottle to your taste.
  • The pricing is so strange. At some stores this is more than Redbreast 12, and at others its less. It drives me mad because when I’m craving it it seems like they want $100 bucks for this, but then I’ll see it a week later for $55.

Whiskey Dreams – Pops Mccann

Pops McCann is available in a small number of states at the moment and offers several different offerings. I actually picked it up by accident because the little liquor store I found it in had put it with the Irish Whiskey and I thought I’d found a new Irish Whiskey offering.

At least I’m 99% sure it’s not Irish Whiskey based on my reading of Irish distilling laws. Those laws state:

  • Must be distilled in Ireland
  • Must be aged for a minimum of 3 years in Ireland
  • Must be aged in barrels.

Based on my reading of how they make Pop’s McCcann Whiskey it is distilled in Dundalk, County Louth and shipped to Michigan in vats, called totes. Once in the states it is bottled, labelled, and shipped to a few select states. It says it is finished in Bourbon barrels but there is no age statement, and the bottle says “…Recipe of Irish Tradition & Heritage”.

Please correct me if I’m wrong in the comments, but this isn’t Irish Whiskey.

Okay, so now that I’m done with the research, let’s crack it open and try it.

The Nose

The nose was subtle. There is some wood char and some alcohol but not much else.

The Palate

Pops Mccann has some real funk to it and not in a good way. It tastes chemically and half done to me.

The Score

Pops McCann Whiskey is one of those bottles I actually regret buying. It was just a waste of $40 bucks. I could not even drink Pops McCann in a mixer. I had to pour it out. Pops McCann scored a 0/100 and I Had To Pour It Out because I just couldn’t imagine ever drinking another sip of it.

High N’ Wicked The Wild Rover Single Malt Irish Whiskey is a product of the Royal Oak Distillery in a joint venture with New Riff Distilling. If you are familiar with the Busker brand of Irish Whisky you’ve already drank a few drams that the Royal Oak Distillery created.

High N’ Wicked The Wild Rover Single Malt Irish Whiskey

Unlike American Bourbon, new Irish Whiskey offerings don’t come out every day, so when I saw this bottle of High N’ Wicked The Wild Rover I jumped on it, super excited to open the bottle and try it.

Now that the bottle is open, let’s dig into how it stands up to its peers.

High N’ Wicked The Wild Rover Single Malt Irish Whiskey

The Nose

The nose on this High N’ Wicked The Wild Rover Single Malt Irish Whiskey is delicate but deep. There are those lovely butter cookie notes I love in Irish Whisky in general mixed with vanilla and molasses. The sweetness here is rich but some ends with a dry not that really accents the time spent in the Sherry Casks. For a Whiskey bottled at cask strength there is zero booziness.

The Palate

This whiskey is just so damn smooth. There is absolutely no hint that this was bottled at cask strength. The front of my tongue is awash in desert flavors. Sweetness and butter cookies. The mid tongue blends that sweetness and creamy maltiness with the dryness of the time spent in the sherry casks. The finish is a blend of those sweet flavors and the dryness of the sherry. It really is a masterful blend.

These are very rich flavors. Have you ever had a really fatty, creamy meal that was amazing, but also made you think you just couldn’t eat another bite? It is so so rich you can’t take it? That is exactly how this High N’ Wicked The Wild Rover made me feel.

The Score

High N’ Wicked The Wild Rover Single Malt Irish Whiskey scored a 97/100 making it Sip Worthy. This is an expensive whiskey, but if you have the dollars, it is well worth a try.

Pros

  • This is a dangerous bottle. It is so smooth you don’t feel the Cask Strength bottling until your head is swimming a bit.
  • Sometimes I crave that dry sherry finish on my Irish Whiskey and this knocked it out of the park.

Cons

  • At $160 bucks this is a steep price for the bottle.
  • This is a limited release. if you love it you may not be able to find it again.

Whiskey Dreams – Redbreast Kentucky Oak Edition Irish Whiskey

Redbreast is my favorite all time whiskey distiller. Needless to say that as soon as I saw a new edition coming out I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it.

Redbreast

The nose on this Redbreast Kentucky Oak Edition is a little bit boozy but I think its too be expected with a 101 Proof statement. Mixed in with that is the nose that I’ve come to love from Redbreast. There are butter cookies, vanilla, and just a hint of oak.

The mouth feel of Redbreast Kentucky Oak Edition is crisp and clean. The tip of my tongue instantly fell in love. This is an old friend. That initial touch is just so sweet and full of all the things that makes Redbreast 12 the amazing bottle it is. It isn’t until the Whiskey hit my mid tongue that I really started to appreciate the time spent in the Oak Barrels. That Oak and Spice really hit on the mid tongue and become almost, but not quite, too much on the finish.

Redbreast Kentucky Oak Edition scored a 80/100, making it Sip Worthy. I enjoyed it, but not enough to buy a few bottles for my Whiskey Safe. I will definitely buy another bottle when the prices come down, but its not so good that I feel the desire to keep a few bottles on hand to be ready for a long winter or my retirement.

  • If you are a Redbreast fan this is a must try, even if its only once.
  • A great addition to the Redbreast family because sometimes you just want something a little different.
  • Perfect for the bourbon lover.

Cons

  • I picked up my bottle for $125 and I am already seeing it go for $199. Hopefully the supply keeps up with demand and the price falls back to something reasonable.
  • The oak was nice, but it also overpowered a lot of what I love about Redbreast 12.

Whiskey Dreams – Egans Fortitude Irish Whiskey

Egan’s Fortitude Irish Whiskey is aged exclusively in Pedro Ximénez casks. Pedro Ximénez sherry is well known for being a syrupy sweet, yet dry, and those flavor profiles are really prevalent in this whiskey. Egan’s Fortitude Irish Whiskey carries no age statement, so it is likely bottled at the bare minimum of 3 years which is required to be called Irish Whiskey.

Egans Irish Whiskey

The nose on this Irish Whiskey is a gem. I could sniff this for desert, that’s how sweet and fruity it is.

Sadly, that sweet, fruity nose is overpowered by the dry sherry notes from the Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. I like the dryness the sherry adds on the front of my tongue, but the finish is almost sour for me.

My son saw me take the first sip of this and said my face scrunched up. I may have said it finishes like “cat pee”.

He asked me how I knew what cat pee tasted like. I changed the subject.

Something about Egan’s Fortitude Irish Whiskey just doesn’t agree with me. I tried it over some ice to see if that would help but it just made it cold and distasteful for me.

Overall I’m more likely to pour a dram of this and just enjoy the nose. The flavors from the sherry really wash away what I enjoy in a single malt, so needless to say, Egan’s Fortitude Irish Whiskey isn’t making it into my Whiskey Safe, and is scoring a Just Bad 26/100. Yes, it is at the higher end of Just Bad, but that is because the nose is just so nice.

  • The raisins, figs and dates from the sherry casks overpowers the flavors of the Single Malt.
  • The dryness of the sherry does something funky on my tongue. It almost turns the finish of this whiskey sour for me.

Whiskey Places – The Dead Rabbit

The Dead Rabbit is a famous cocktail bar located on 30 Water St in New York and I was lucky enough to go there with my coworkers. We booked a table upstairs which means a bit more space. Trust me when I say that is a good thing because this place gets busy. Then we started to drink.

I tried two of their signature drinks, of which there are many, but I have to be honest when I say I didn’t enjoy them as much as I did when I switched over to Redbreast 12. They were interesting, but they were honestly just a bit too sweet and a bit too funky for me.

Signature Drinks

I may be too old for The Dead Rabbit, or maybe just too much of a whiskey snob. After the first two mixed drinks I changed over to neat Irish Whiskey before ending the night with Red Breast 12, which you can never go wrong with.

I had fun and enjoyed the huge selection of Irish Whiskey. So why did The Dead Rabbit score a 75/100? The fact that the mixed drinks were a bit too funky for me cost them points, as well as the cost. I know this is in Manhattan but I’m a country boy and the prices seemed astronomical to me.

The other factor that cost The Dead Rabbit some points was how busy it got. It is a popular bar, and once our private table expired we went downstairs to the main bar area. It was just a press of people. It is hard to enjoy a drink when every movement jostles you up against someone else.
