Hell-Cat Maggie Irish Whiskey

TJ Provost

Hell-Cath Maggie is distilled at the Cooley Distillery in Lough, Ireland and bottled in the US by Philips Distilling Co. What does that actually mean? I think it means this blended Whiskey is put together from bulk production using mixed grains for its blended whiskeys.

The Nose

I poured a dram into a Glencairn Whisky Glass and swirled it before nosing. Unlike a single malt distilled in a pot still, there are no butter cookie notes. I mention that because its one of the things I love about Irish Whiskey. The first thing I appreciate with this whiskey is a mixture of ethanol and leather.

The Palate

There is a hint of sweetness on the front of my tongue that quickly turns jagged and edgy on the mid tongue before finishing rough. For a 40% ABV, 80 Proof whisky it feels higher proof. That’s not a good thing. The alcohol really washes out any subtle notes the whiskey might have – if they are actually hiding in there at all.

The Score

Hell-Cath Maggie scores 32/100, making it suitable for Mixers or On Ice. It is a bit too rough and doesn’t have enough finer notes to sip at straight from the bottle. At $25 bucks I have better options that don’t have the rough edges. My first choice would be Paddy’s Old Irish Whiskey which I can get for a few bucks cheaper if I drive a little bit. My second choice would be to just pony up a few more bucks and grab a bottle of Jameson.

A dark yellow that looks mildly artificial.

Pros

  • Who doesn’t want to try a new Irish Whiskey?
  • It really makes me appreciate Paddy’s which I can get at near the same price.

Cons

  • There is alcohol in it if you want to use this for mixed drinks, but its not suitable for sipping.
  • There are better options at the $25 price point.

Grace O’Malley Believe in Grace is a new offering. How new? In honor of the 16th century Irish pirate queen, Grace O’Malley Spirits was launched in 2017. When it comes to distilling Irish Whiskey, anything under a few decades is incredibly young. The brand that would become Redbreast started in 1903. Jameson sprung to life in 1780!

According to the Grace O’Malley home page, they’ve most recently won awards in 2021.

Now we get to see how a babe in the woods holds up to the long standing champs in the Irish Whiskey world. Will those awards hold up? We are about to find out.

The Nose

As usual I start by pouring a dram into a Glencairn Whisky Glass. I swirl it a little before nosing and sniffing very gently. The swirling really brings the alcohol forward, making it hard to appreciate the aromas hiding under the ETOH. Once the alcohol settles I do appreciate vague notes of vanilla.

The Palate

Grace O’Malley Believe in Grace has a clean mouth feel. There is just a hint of sweet on the tip of my tongue that hints at something nicer. Unfortunately that all falls apart once the whiskey gets to my mid tongue. What start as clean and mild goes wild on the mid tongue. Lots of edges that turn to a rough finish.

The Score

Grace O’Malley Believe in Grace scores a 31/100, putting it at the bottom of the Mixers or On Ice category. The rough finish really killed the enjoyment for me. Putting it over the rocks didn’t actually help much. There are just a lot of jagged edges on this finish.

Color

A medium yellowish that reminds me to drink more fluids.

  • It is always nice to try a new Irish Whiskey.
  • I have a bottle to make Irish Coffee with now.

Cons

  • I just wasted $40.
  • At $40 there are way better options out there.

Tullamore D.E.W Irish Whiskey 12 Year

Tullamore D.E.W. is named after Daniel E. Williams. Williams was the distillery’s general manager, and is credited with crafting the brands distinctive flavor profile and characteristics. Mr. Williams sadly passed in 2007. I however lift a glass in appreciation every time I crack a bottle of Tullamore.

Tullamore D.E.W is a blended whiskey, created by combining  pot still, malt, and grain whiskey.

The Nose

The moment I started to poor a dram into a Glencairn Glass I was hit with lovely notes. The nose is floral, sweet, and quite nice. I could spend all day appreciating the carefully created balance.

The Palate

The front of my tongue is awash with the sweetness and floral notes I love from the nose. I wish I could hold that initial touch for longer. As the whiskey moves to the mid tongue we get spice that quickly turns to wood char. That spice and wood char is nice, but it tends to overpower the sweetness on the finish. The aftertaste lingers, overpowering the sweetness and the softness of the initial sip. Don’t get me wrong. I really enjoy this dram. I just wish the finish was slightly more between the front of the tongue sweetness and the spice and char on the back of the tongue and swallow.

The Score – Tullamore D.E.W Irish Whiskey 12 Year

This Tullamore D.E.W 12 Year scores 73/100, making it Sip Worthy. What cost it some points? It was the shift between the initial notes to the finish. I really enjoy Tullamore D.E.W 12 Year and pick up a bottle whenever I see it below $45. I just wish that transition from start to the long finish was a tad bit smoother. My solution to that is to just have a few more glasses. Oddly enough that transition doesn’t bother me after three or four drams. Go figure.

Light yellow and straw.

Proof

40.0% ABV | 80 Proof

Pros:

  • If you can find it around $40, that’s a buy.
  • Lovely, sweet floral nose.
  • Smooth and easily sipped.
  • Sweet, malty notes that swirl with spice.
  • Long spicy finish that lingers long after the swallow.
  • Readily available.

Cons:

  • This cost me $55 locally, which is too much for this bottle.
  • The sweet notes are quickly overpowered by the spice and oak.
  • The initial swallow is sweet but the aftertaste quickly wipes that out with spice and wood char.

Kilbrin 10 Year Single Malt Irish Whiskey

Kilbrin 10 Year Single Malt is distilled in pot stills from 100% malted barley. It is produced at just one distillery, at least according to their website. What distillery? I can’t find that. There is a parish in County Cork by the name of Kilbrin, but there is no distillery there that I can find.

Based on the pieces I can put together from online research Kilbrin is a sourced whiskey. It’s not available in Ireland, and it sounds like its basically purchased from other vendors, and bottled as Kilbrin. Let’s see how it does!

The Nose

The nose is fruity and full of apples with just a hint of vanilla.

The Palate

The first sip is very approachable but the finish has a lot of alcohol in it. Enough that I feel it going up my sinuses and into the back of my throat. I feel like Kilbrin’s distiller deserves a shout out for how it opens. The whiskey is pleasant on the front of my tongue and has a decent body. It starts so strong. Sadly it doesn’t finish so strong. The finish is a bit rough, full of alcohol burn, and not nearly as smooth as I’d like from a bottle with a 10 Year age statement.

The Score – Kilbrin 10 Year Single Malt Irish Whiskey

Accordingly Kilbrin 10 Year Single Malt scores 52/100. Two things cost it points. The first is the rough finish. The second is the price. For a bottle in this price range that is combined with a 10 Year age statement I just need more.

Color

Dark yellow with a little touch of murkiness.

Proof

40.0% ABV | 80 Proof

Pros:

  • Entry level bottle with an entry level price.

Cons:

  • It is not sold in Ireland. If its not good enough for the Irish, its not good enough for me.
  • The opening hides a finish that hits with a bit of rough gravel on the swallow with strong notes of alcohol.
  • At a $50/55 price point, Knappognue Castle 12 Year is a much better option.

Whiskey Dreams – NatterJack Irish Whiskey

Natterjack Irish Whiskey is a blended, triple distilled whiskey from Gortinore Distillery in Dublin Ireland. I have to be honest, I didn’t care if this was Irish Whiskey or Bourbon, I was picking up this bottle now matter what because of the distinctive Toad label.

Now let’s see how the inside of the bottle compares to the outside.

The Nose

The nose on this Natterjack is hard to describe. Is it acid and leather I’m smelling? I’ve appreciated this note in other blends, and it is not something that I’m overly fond of. It is funky, and not in a good way.

The Palate

That acid and leather on the nose came right through on the first sip. On the second sip my front and mid tongue appreciate sweetness that quickly turns to leather and funk on the swallow.

The Score

The funk cost Natterjack big points. I’m giving Natterjack a 35/100, putting it just into the Mixed Drinks Only territory.

For this price, I could buy almost two bottles of Paddies, and that is a much better sip compared to this bottle.

Whiskey Dreams – Pops Mccann

Pops McCann is available in a small number of states at the moment and offers several different offerings. I actually picked it up by accident because the little liquor store I found it in had put it with the Irish Whiskey and I thought I’d found a new Irish Whiskey offering.

At least I’m 99% sure it’s not Irish Whiskey based on my reading of Irish distilling laws. Those laws state:

  • Must be distilled in Ireland
  • Must be aged for a minimum of 3 years in Ireland
  • Must be aged in barrels.

Based on my reading of how they make Pop’s McCcann Whiskey it is distilled in Dundalk, County Louth and shipped to Michigan in vats, called totes. Once in the states it is bottled, labelled, and shipped to a few select states. It says it is finished in Bourbon barrels but there is no age statement, and the bottle says “…Recipe of Irish Tradition & Heritage”.

Please correct me if I’m wrong in the comments, but this isn’t Irish Whiskey.

Okay, so now that I’m done with the research, let’s crack it open and try it.

The Nose

The nose was subtle. There is some wood char and some alcohol but not much else.

The Palate

Pops Mccann has some real funk to it and not in a good way. It tastes chemically and half done to me.

The Score

Pops McCann Whiskey is one of those bottles I actually regret buying. It was just a waste of $40 bucks. I could not even drink Pops McCann in a mixer. I had to pour it out. Pops McCann scored a 0/100 and I Had To Pour It Out because I just couldn’t imagine ever drinking another sip of it.

Whiskey Dreams – Basil Hayden’s

Basil Haden’s is one of my go to Whiskeys. It is perfect for pretty much every occasion, whether that’s to introduce a new whisky drinker into the fold or just have dram with dinner. It has the combination of being relatively cheap (in the bourbon world) and easy drinking. I’ve heard people claim that because its only 40% ABV that it is whiskey-lite or that it doesn’t pack the punch of other whiskeys. I honestly think those people are crazy.

If you haven’t tried Basil Haden’s, I highly suggest getting a bottle, it is an excellent bourbon. If you don’t believe me, look at my night last night.

Basil Hayden’s Disappearing

I did not mean to drink that much, and yes I did pay for it the next day, but we were playing board games and having a ball.

The Nose

The nose on this Basil Haden’s is perfect for the new Whiskey Lover. It’s balanced with vanilla and oak that also has a bit of citrus that gives it just a little zing. It’s not layered or complex, which makes it perfect for new sippers trying to learn the ropes.

The Palate

The first thing that hits is a touch of tannin that quickly turns to vanilla and spice on the mid tongue that dances with those citrus notes. The finish is a wonderful blend of all those notes. There is subtle sweetness, vanilla, spice, and has a nice finish.

The Score

In terms of ranking, this is a solid 75/100. Don’t let that score fool you, it is absolutely Sip Worthy. Of all the Bourbon’s I drink, this is one of those bottles I always have on hand and absolutely keep a few bottles in my Whiskey Safe to carry me through in the event of a natural disaster.
