Whiskey Dreams – Breaker

I am always on the look out for new whiskeys whenever I am out and about, so i was super excited when I saw this Breaker on the shelf at my local store.

Breaker

I poured my usual two fingers into my favorite Yeti Tumbler and swirled it around so I could breath in the sweet aroma of this deep amber bourbon before I took a sip.

The Nose

The nose on Breaker hits hard, but in a good way. There are a lot of things too appreciate on the nose. There is vanilla and citrus that blends really nicely with caramel that ends with a nice bit of spicey pepper.

The Palate

While the nose was amazing, things really fell apart on the first sip. The Rye and spice just don’t work for me.

The Score

I know I don’t like strong Rye whiskeys, but I keep trying. Unfortunately, I found that Breaker was not something I enjoyed. I’m giving it a 29/100, making it Just Bad. I was able to drink a few sips before pouring it out and going to my stand by, Basil Hayden’s.

Color

Overly brewed tea.

Proof

45.0% ABV

Pros

  • Sweet nose with hints of vanilla.
  • Deep amber color that invites you to sip.

Cons

  • Surprisingly rough. I expected this to be smooth.
  • The nose was better than the palate.
  • Too expensive to use for mixers but not smooth enough to drink straight.

Whiskey Dreams – Clyde May’s Original Alabama Style Whiskey

Clyde May’s Original Alabama Style Whiskey hails from, you guessed it, Kentucky, New York, and maybe Alabama? According to my research this whiskey is made in Kentucky and aged for five or six years.

Made with a bourbon mashbill of 55% corn, 30% rye and 15% barley, this is aged for five to six years in charred American oak barrels. Then the Conecuh Ridge Distillery, which is in Long Island, N.Y., will process the whiskey before it moves on to Troy Alabama for bottling?

At least that is the picture I’m piecing together from multiple other bits of data. If I’ve got any of that wrong, let me know in the comments and if I can verify I’ll edit the above to be as accurate as possible.

Clyde May’s Original Alabama Style Whiskey

Now on to the whiskey.

First off, I really enjoy the nose on this Clyde May’s Original Alabama Style Whiskey. It is sweet and fruity and awash in caramel that finishes with just a touch of wood and leather. It’s not super complicated, but its simplicity really lets you appreciate what is there more.

The mouth feel is light. This is not a heavy or oily whiskey. The first two notes that hit me are that caramel and the wood char which finishes with a bit of fruitiness on the back of my tongue. Every now and then a bit of pepper creeps in, and I seem to be able to appreciate it more as I continue to sip.

Clyde May’s Original Alabama Style Whiskey scored a 71/100 for being smooth, straight forward, and easily sippable. Now I have go get a full size bottle to keep on my shelf for those times I want to enjoy a nice dram at a reasonable price, or introduce a newbie into the fold.

Color

Light redwood stain.

Proof

46.0% ABV

Pros

  • Great introduction whiskey for newbies.
  • This whiskey is very true to itself. Its simple, straight forward, and everything just works. The nose is nice and gives you a good idea of what your going to be drinking. The palate is clean, smooth, sweet, and is an easier sipper.
  • At $35 this is a great value for a very sippable dram.

Cons

  • If you are new to whiskey, this might set a fishhook that is really had to pull out.
  • If your a whiskey aficionado with high brow tastes, this might not meet all your needs.

Whiskey Dreams – Jameson The Distiller’s Safe

I live in a very small town? How small? So small that I had tried every bourbon they had and picked up this bottle of The Distiller’s Safe because it was one of the only bottles in the store I hadn’t tried yet. Sadly, since that first lucky day, I haven’t been able to find it again.

How good is it? Well, this should tell you something…

I’ve had this bottle of The Distiller’s Safe for two weekends, with the week in between, and I’ve found it to be so smooth, mellow, and easy to sip that it just kind of evaporates out of the bottle. Some sippers have complained that it is too mild, that the flavor isn’t there, but I have to disagree, I think this is the perfect blend of smooth, tasty caramel mixed with just the right hints of sweet fruits.

How did Jameson pull it off? As the name implies, they let their Head/Master Distiller Brian Nation have the reigns and let his skills shine through in this blended mix of pot still and grain whiskey that is aged for approximately 5 to 6 years in ex bourbon casks. Please note I’m calling it blended based on what I know, but Jameson hasn’t confirmed exactly how its made so I am making an educated guess.

Compared to regular Jameson this The Distiller’s Safe knocks the ball out of the park. It is clean, smooth, and so much more refined.

Distiller’s Safe is light in color, but don’t let that fool you, that light color hides a depth of sweet, easy sipping that earned this a very high score, easily putting it in the top of the Sip Worthy territory.

Jameson Distiller’s Safe earned every point of its 95/100.

Color

Lighter copper mixed with touches of amber.

Pros

  • So smooth that even non whiskey drinkers will enjoy it.
  • Subtle but elegant.
  • The nose is perfect to train on as there are plenty of swirling characteristics to pin point.

Cons

  • Some people might find the subtleness to be a con. If you like strong flavors over subtle ones, this might not be the whiskey for you.
  • It is very hard to find (near me).
  • Can get expensive if you really liked it.

Whiskey Dreams – Bushmills Irish Whiskey

When it comes to price point, Bushmills is on that very affordable area with Jameson. Neither have an age statement but Bushmills is aged for at least 5 years. Jameson is aged for at least 4 years. These two whiskey should be in a neck in neck fight over the everyday affordable Irish Whiskey sipper.

Bushmills Irish Whiskey

The nose on this Bushmills is very mild. There isn’t much there to be honest.

The mouth feel is light, but the taste is really lacking. There is a hint of sweet honey but it is immediately overpowered with alcohol and wood char. I understand that this is a mix of malt that is diluted with column-distilled grain whiskey to reach the price point, but the end result is pretty rough. The aftertaste seems to stick to the back of my tongue. I kept finding myself swallowing again after I swallowed. As if I could somehow wash the aftertaste out.

I was expecting this Bushmills to be very close to Jameson. Sadly the end results are not really comparable. Regular old Jameson is a much smoother offering and for the extra dollar it usually runs by me, it is well worth it.

Bushmills has a wood char burn and a slight aftertaste on the back of my tongue that I don’t find appealing. My honest advice is to spend a little more, or buy this to make mixed drinks. Bushmills eared a a 50/100. Save it for mixers or put it on a lot of ice.

Color

Light yellow honey.

Proof

40.0% ABV

Pros

  • Available pretty much everywhere.
  • Good if you like to pour some whiskey in your coffee or make other mixed drinks.

Cons

  • Not as refined as some options which are just a few dollars more.
  • Leaves an odd taste on the back of the tongue.
