ChestNut Farms Bourbon

TJ Provost

Chestnut Farms Straight Bourbon Whiskey is distilled by Barton 1792 Distillery and is 90 proof. It won a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco Spirits Competition according to their website. What year? I couldn’t find it, but that is probably due to my poor google skills. What I was able to find is that this bourbon doesn’t have a website, and is made at the same Barton 1792 distillery where they make the Costco and Trader Joe’s brand whiskeys. (According to the internet.)

I’ve found awards are hit and miss for me. Some things that people rave over, tastes like gasoline to me, while some things that didn’t even place, were things I’d buy another bottle of, so I didn’t get my hopes up for this Chestnut Farms.

I’m not a huge fan of rye. For me it just creates a lot of sharp edges and an aftertaste I don’t enjoy. Maybe that will change as I get older. I remember a time when I didn’t like Brussel sprouts, but now I love them.

Why am I talking about rye? It’s because this Chestnut Farms has some rye added onto its 51% corn and malted barley mash bill. That usually means I’m not going to like it, but in this case, they got the ratio just about perfect. All those rough edges I don’t appreciate in rye whiskeys are smoothed out and come out as spicy warmth in my mouth.

The Nose

The nose is mild. There is a little caramel and toffee, but its not complex and overall it very light.

The Palate

The palate is a little different from the nose. It has that warm flush of a regular bourbon that quickly turns to oak char and then finishes with the spice from the rye. Overall it is a very well balanced whiskey and a great introduction to rye for those who aren’t really rye lovers.

The Score – ChestNut Farms Bourbon

Chestnut Farms is Sip Worthy and scored a 77/100. It isn’t making it into my Whiskey Safe, but it is a bottle I could see myself picking up when the mood strikes me again.

Deep golden yellow.

Proof

45.0% ABV | 90 Proof

Pros:

  • Perfect balance of corn and rye.
  • Ends with a nice mix of rye spice and oak notes.

Cons:

  • If you don’t like rye at all, you may not like this.
  • At a $45 price point, there are a lot of very competitive whiskeys to choose from.

Wild Turkey Bourbon

Wild Turkey Bourbon is a staple at most bars. I actually challenge you to go into any bar that you can wear jeans into and find one that sells bourbon where this isn’t on the shelf. As a young man, I remember when a single bottle of Wild Turkey was enough to keep four of five of us good for a night. Those were the days.

Wild Turkey Bourbon

Wild Turkey has a long history, and has been in production for over sixty years. The interesting part, is that it was started in New York in 1940 and wasn’t bought by a company in Kentucky until 1972.

The Nose

The nose on this Wild Turkey is flat to me. I can smell the wood char and a hint of sweet, but its very basic.

The Palate

The palate opens with burnt marshmallow that continues through the finish with a mix of char and burnt sugar. The flavor reminds me of Hudson’s Baby Bourbon. Its much milder than Hudson’s Baby Bourbon, but its there, that burn marshmallow that ends in a hint of leather.

The Score – Wild Turkey Bourbon

The good news is that this Wild Turkey is a lot milder than Hudson’s Baby Bourbon. While I can drink Wild Turkey straight if I have to, for me this is really a bottle that should be saved for Mixed Drinks Only, scoring a 63/100.

Color

Amber and yellow. A little blood in the pee?

Proof

40.0% ABV | 80 Proof

Pros:

  • Cheap.
  • Easy to find.
  • Affordable way to make lots of mixed drinks.
  • If there aren’t other options, this can be sipped, which makes it a good backup that is easy to find.

Cons:

  • If you don’t like toasted marshmallows, this may not be for you.
  • Very simple taste profile.

Agitator Kentucky Bourbon

I’m not sure what audience Agitator is going after, but apparently its the crazy drunks? Wait, how did I end up here? – Oh, never mind.

I guess I’m a rule breaker and a rabble rousers.

According to Agitator’s web site, Agitator starts as a 21% rye whiskey that is aged for two years in new charred white oak before spending a few months in California Cabernet Sauvignon barrels.

Let’s see how that effort pays off.

The Nose

The first thing that hit me on the nose was the alcohol. Swirling the Glencairn Whisky Glass made my eyes water. This whiskey is only 86 proof, but the alcohol on the nose would have made me guess higher. It wasn’t until I added some ice and let it open up that I could appreciate any of the more delicate notes. Once it opened up I could really smell the oak and vanilla. I was expecting to maybe smell something from the time spent in the Cabernet Sauvignon barrels, but the nose is all bourbon to me.

The Palate

The first sip matched the nose. Straight, the alcohol smacks you in the face. Opened up a bit with some ice or water and I can appreciate the oaky vanilla on the sip, and it does finish with a red wine dry, acidic mouth feel that hints at a bit of sweet fruit.

The Score – Agitator Kentucky Bourbon

I’m giving Agitator a 50/100, but because of its red wine roots, I am very curious to find out how it does in a Manhattan, as this is a Mixed Drinks Only bottle from here on out.

Color

The color of dehydrated urine after you’ve been punched in the kidney a few times.

Proof

43.0% ABV | 86 Proof

Pros:

  • If you like a dry finish, this might be right up your alley.
  • Opens up with a bit of ice or water.
  • Red wine finish.

Cons:

  • The straight whiskey has a very strong alcohol punch.
  • Is $30 bucks too much for this? The fact that I’m not sure makes it a con for me.

Willett Pot Still Reserve Whiskey

I’ve had this Willett Pot Still Reserve Straight Bourbon Whiskey sitting on a shelf for a few weeks and finally decided it was time to crack it open.

I’m always nervous opening offerings with really distinct bottles. I’m afraid that the unique bottle is there to distract you from something else. Happily, at least with this Willet Post Still Reserve, that wasn’t the case.

The Nose

The nose on this starts a little on the punchy side. Even without swirling the Glencairn Whiskey Glass at all the ethanol just flows out of the glass. That alcohol overpowers the more refined notes, at least until you open it up with a few drop of water. Those drops of water really let the brown sugar and vanilla shine though.

The Palate

This reminds me really heavily of Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style Bourbon with its brown sugar that really sits on the mid tongue and then transitions to oak and char on the finish. Is it as good as the Old Forester? Not quite. It’s good, but it doesn’t finish as smoothly as the Old Forester in my opinion.

The Score – Willett Pot Still Reserve

I enjoyed this Willett Pot Still Reserve Straight Bourbon, but not enough to put it in my Whiskey Safe. That rougher finish cost it some points for me, although the price does seem reasonable for this level of whiskey. Willett Pot Still Reserve Straight Bourbon scored an 81/100.

Pros:

  • The brown sugar and vanilla is really enjoyable.
  • If you like a sweet middle and an oaky finish, you will love this.

Cons:

  • Some small rough edges on the finish.
  • Hard to hide the bottle if your sneaking new whiskey into the house as it is quite distinctive.

Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch Bourbon

My bottle of Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch Bourbon ended up on my shelf almost by accident. I’m always on the lookout for new Bourbon, but my local liquor stores are empty wells at this point. I went in to get some beer for the SO and saw the cardboard tube hiding out behind some Jack Daniels – almost as if someone was trying to hide the last bottle of bourbon I haven’t already tried from my local store. Was it planned, I have no proof, but someone was trying to keep that bottle for themselves, and or deny me from getting it.

Thankfully I was curious and moved a few bottle of Jack to find my prize, and what a prize it is.

The Nose

The nose of Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch Bourbon is really brought out by swirling it in a Glencairn Whisky Glass. There is a pleasant caramel, cherries, and black pepper that swirls and mingles with citrus and cinnamon. The woody notes float throughout. It is very enjoyable nose.

The Palate

My personal preferences are for 40% to 45% alcohol bourbons. I do like some higher alcohol content bourbons, and usually let them open up with an ice cube or a splash of water. While this Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch is 50% alcohol, it is so well balanced between vanilla, caramel and spices that it is just a treat to sip.

The Score – Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch Bourbon

It became my new favorite whiskey on the first sip, and now I have to find another bottle because my OCD won’t let me drink this one until I have a backup.

Part of me really wanted to give this Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch a perfect score of 100, but the real challenge for me is that I want to believe there is something even better, maybe even six bottles that are better. Hopefully I have another twenty years to find those bottles. If not, I’ll come back and update my score on this Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch to a 100 at some point in the future.

  • Well balanced vanilla nose that is enjoyable just to breath in.
  • Perfect mix of spices that light up your palate.
  • Amazing value for the dollar if you can find it at the price I paid for it at $45. I now see bottles going for $150!

Whiskey Dreams – Woodford Reserve

This was the only bourbon the flight had when I was heading out to Seattle. I splurged as I had ten hours of travel in front of me, and an Uber ride after that – so I wasn’t going to be driving. What better way to spend a travel day than day drinking right?

Woodford Reserve

Sadly, it is hard to enjoy day drinking when they want $13 bucks for this 50ml bottle. Was it worth it?

The Nose

The nose was underwhelming but for some woody notes. Granted, by this time I was at 30k feet and that may have impacted my olfactory senses, but the nose wasn’t anything special.

The Palate

The palate is where things really fell apart. When I asked if this was worth the $13 bucks, the answer is no, absolutely not. I know I paid more because I was on a plane, and maybe the altitude effected my taste, but I did not enjoy this Woodford Reserve at all. It was all bite and sharpness. It was so rough I had to ask for a can of soda to mix it with, and even then my plan to day drink fell apart because I could not bring myself to order another bottle.

The Score

Overall I’m giving this Woodford Reserve a 29/100. I drank it, and I might again if it is the only thing available, but by god I’m not going to enjoy it.

  • If it is the only bourbon they have on the plane, well, I guess it’s better than nothing.

  • Super expensive when bought on a flight.

Whiskey Dreams – Pure Kentucky

Finding new bottles is hard in my little town, so when I found this bottle of Pure Kentucky I was genuinely excited, especially when I saw it had won a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Unfortunately the high proof and 12 years in the barrel turned this into something my palate just couldn’t enjoy. I’m scoring this as a 28/100 due to the sharpness this whiskey hits you with straight out of the barrel.

Pure Kentucky

The Nose

Other reviewers have commented on fruit and spice which are really forward on the nose. For me the alcohol was more forward, and while I could appreciate the spice, I could not appreciate any fruit.

The Palate

Pure Kentucky is a bit vicious and oily. Combine that with the higher proof and wood notes and this was just a bit too overpowering for me. I felt more slapped in the face than kissed on the lips by this one.

The Score

Pure Kentucky just wasn’t for me. I like to sip my Whiskey, not get slapped in the face by it. Pure Kentucky scored a 28/100, making it Just Bad. This is not a bottle I will be buying again.

You’ve been punched in the kidneys, are poorly hydrated, and have just a touch of blood in your urine.

Cons

  • For me the 107 proof burnt away any flavor.

Whiskey Dreams – Basil Hayden’s

Basil Haden’s is one of my go to Whiskeys. It is perfect for pretty much every occasion, whether that’s to introduce a new whisky drinker into the fold or just have dram with dinner. It has the combination of being relatively cheap (in the bourbon world) and easy drinking. I’ve heard people claim that because its only 40% ABV that it is whiskey-lite or that it doesn’t pack the punch of other whiskeys. I honestly think those people are crazy.

If you haven’t tried Basil Haden’s, I highly suggest getting a bottle, it is an excellent bourbon. If you don’t believe me, look at my night last night.

Basil Hayden’s Disappearing

I did not mean to drink that much, and yes I did pay for it the next day, but we were playing board games and having a ball.

The Nose

The nose on this Basil Haden’s is perfect for the new Whiskey Lover. It’s balanced with vanilla and oak that also has a bit of citrus that gives it just a little zing. It’s not layered or complex, which makes it perfect for new sippers trying to learn the ropes.

The Palate

The first thing that hits is a touch of tannin that quickly turns to vanilla and spice on the mid tongue that dances with those citrus notes. The finish is a wonderful blend of all those notes. There is subtle sweetness, vanilla, spice, and has a nice finish.

The Score

In terms of ranking, this is a solid 75/100. Don’t let that score fool you, it is absolutely Sip Worthy. Of all the Bourbon’s I drink, this is one of those bottles I always have on hand and absolutely keep a few bottles in my Whiskey Safe to carry me through in the event of a natural disaster.

Whiskey Dreams – Clyde May’s Original Alabama Style Whiskey

Clyde May’s Original Alabama Style Whiskey hails from, you guessed it, Kentucky, New York, and maybe Alabama? According to my research this whiskey is made in Kentucky and aged for five or six years.

Made with a bourbon mashbill of 55% corn, 30% rye and 15% barley, this is aged for five to six years in charred American oak barrels. Then the Conecuh Ridge Distillery, which is in Long Island, N.Y., will process the whiskey before it moves on to Troy Alabama for bottling?

At least that is the picture I’m piecing together from multiple other bits of data. If I’ve got any of that wrong, let me know in the comments and if I can verify I’ll edit the above to be as accurate as possible.

Clyde May’s Original Alabama Style Whiskey

Now on to the whiskey.

First off, I really enjoy the nose on this Clyde May’s Original Alabama Style Whiskey. It is sweet and fruity and awash in caramel that finishes with just a touch of wood and leather. It’s not super complicated, but its simplicity really lets you appreciate what is there more.

The mouth feel is light. This is not a heavy or oily whiskey. The first two notes that hit me are that caramel and the wood char which finishes with a bit of fruitiness on the back of my tongue. Every now and then a bit of pepper creeps in, and I seem to be able to appreciate it more as I continue to sip.

Clyde May’s Original Alabama Style Whiskey scored a 71/100 for being smooth, straight forward, and easily sippable. Now I have go get a full size bottle to keep on my shelf for those times I want to enjoy a nice dram at a reasonable price, or introduce a newbie into the fold.

  • Great introduction whiskey for newbies.
  • This whiskey is very true to itself. Its simple, straight forward, and everything just works. The nose is nice and gives you a good idea of what your going to be drinking. The palate is clean, smooth, sweet, and is an easier sipper.
  • At $35 this is a great value for a very sippable dram.

Cons

  • If you are new to whiskey, this might set a fishhook that is really had to pull out.
  • If your a whiskey aficionado with high brow tastes, this might not meet all your needs.

Whiskey Dreams – Knob Creek Small Batch

Knob Creek Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon is produced at the Jim Beam distillery in Clermont Kentucky. Jim Beam is in turned owned by Beam Suntory of Osaka, Japan. The whiskey is aged for 9 years in white oak barrels and bottled at 100 proof.

Knob Creek Small Batch

The nose on this Knob Creek Small Batch is strong. Not in a bad way, it is just very in your face, or in your nose I guess. The first note is strong burnt marshmallow and sugar that hides faint hits of vanilla under it. Surprisingly there isn’t really a lot of alcohol on the nose, which I was expecting given that its 100 proof.

The next surprise was on the tongue. I was expecting the same strong notes from the nose to come through on the palate, but it was actually more subdued. There is brown sugar and marshmallow, and I found they did stick to my tongue. From the moment this dark Bourbon touched my tongue there is that sweetness that gets a touch of leather on the finish. I couldn’t taste any of the Vanilla though. It was hinted at on the nose, but I just couldn’t find it on the tongue.

I’m not sure if it is the proof and the sweetness that didn’t seem to work for me. While Knob Creek Small Batch is 100 proof, it wasn’t really the alcohol I didn’t like either. It was just something about how the burnt sugar stuck to my tongue. A nice long finish is awesome, but if it hangs around too long it’s not quite as enjoyable.

I did however find that a few ice cubes really helped to cut down that sweetness and helped to soften the finish. Knob Creek Small Batch earned itself a 49/100.
