Whiskey Dreams – Woodford Reserve

This was the only bourbon the flight had when I was heading out to Seattle. I splurged as I had ten hours of travel in front of me, and an Uber ride after that – so I wasn’t going to be driving. What better way to spend a travel day than day drinking right?

Woodford Reserve

Sadly, it is hard to enjoy day drinking when they want $13 bucks for this 50ml bottle. Was it worth it?

The Nose

The nose was underwhelming but for some woody notes. Granted, by this time I was at 30k feet and that may have impacted my olfactory senses, but the nose wasn’t anything special.

The Palate

The palate is where things really fell apart. When I asked if this was worth the $13 bucks, the answer is no, absolutely not. I know I paid more because I was on a plane, and maybe the altitude effected my taste, but I did not enjoy this Woodford Reserve at all. It was all bite and sharpness. It was so rough I had to ask for a can of soda to mix it with, and even then my plan to day drink fell apart because I could not bring myself to order another bottle.

The Score

Overall I’m giving this Woodford Reserve a 29/100. I drank it, and I might again if it is the only thing available, but by god I’m not going to enjoy it.

Toffee colored river water.

Pros

  • If it is the only bourbon they have on the plane, well, I guess it’s better than nothing.

Cons

  • Super expensive when bought on a flight.
  • All sharp edges and hit you in the face alcohol strongness.

Whiskey Dreams – Breaker

I am always on the look out for new whiskeys whenever I am out and about, so i was super excited when I saw this Breaker on the shelf at my local store.

Breaker

I poured my usual two fingers into my favorite Yeti Tumbler and swirled it around so I could breath in the sweet aroma of this deep amber bourbon before I took a sip.

The Nose

The nose on Breaker hits hard, but in a good way. There are a lot of things too appreciate on the nose. There is vanilla and citrus that blends really nicely with caramel that ends with a nice bit of spicey pepper.

The Palate

While the nose was amazing, things really fell apart on the first sip. The Rye and spice just don’t work for me.

The Score

I know I don’t like strong Rye whiskeys, but I keep trying. Unfortunately, I found that Breaker was not something I enjoyed. I’m giving it a 29/100, making it Just Bad. I was able to drink a few sips before pouring it out and going to my stand by, Basil Hayden’s.

Color

Overly brewed tea.

Proof

45.0% ABV

Pros

  • Sweet nose with hints of vanilla.
  • Deep amber color that invites you to sip.

Cons

  • Surprisingly rough. I expected this to be smooth.
  • The nose was better than the palate.
  • Too expensive to use for mixers but not smooth enough to drink straight.

Whiskey Dreams – Pure Kentucky

Finding new bottles is hard in my little town, so when I found this bottle of Pure Kentucky I was genuinely excited, especially when I saw it had won a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Unfortunately the high proof and 12 years in the barrel turned this into something my palate just couldn’t enjoy. I’m scoring this as a 28/100 due to the sharpness this whiskey hits you with straight out of the barrel.

Pure Kentucky

The Nose

Other reviewers have commented on fruit and spice which are really forward on the nose. For me the alcohol was more forward, and while I could appreciate the spice, I could not appreciate any fruit.

The Palate

Pure Kentucky is a bit vicious and oily. Combine that with the higher proof and wood notes and this was just a bit too overpowering for me. I felt more slapped in the face than kissed on the lips by this one.

The Score

Pure Kentucky just wasn’t for me. I like to sip my Whiskey, not get slapped in the face by it. Pure Kentucky scored a 28/100, making it Just Bad. This is not a bottle I will be buying again.

Color

You’ve been punched in the kidneys, are poorly hydrated, and have just a touch of blood in your urine.

53.5% ABV

Pros

  • Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Cons

  • For me the 107 proof burnt away any flavor.
  • I didn’t like the way it coated my mouth.

Whiskey Dreams – Basil Hayden’s

Basil Haden’s is one of my go to Whiskeys. It is perfect for pretty much every occasion, whether that’s to introduce a new whisky drinker into the fold or just have dram with dinner. It has the combination of being relatively cheap (in the bourbon world) and easy drinking. I’ve heard people claim that because its only 40% ABV that it is whiskey-lite or that it doesn’t pack the punch of other whiskeys. I honestly think those people are crazy.

If you haven’t tried Basil Haden’s, I highly suggest getting a bottle, it is an excellent bourbon. If you don’t believe me, look at my night last night.

Basil Hayden’s Disappearing

I did not mean to drink that much, and yes I did pay for it the next day, but we were playing board games and having a ball.

The Nose

The nose on this Basil Haden’s is perfect for the new Whiskey Lover. It’s balanced with vanilla and oak that also has a bit of citrus that gives it just a little zing. It’s not layered or complex, which makes it perfect for new sippers trying to learn the ropes.

The Palate

The first thing that hits is a touch of tannin that quickly turns to vanilla and spice on the mid tongue that dances with those citrus notes. The finish is a wonderful blend of all those notes. There is subtle sweetness, vanilla, spice, and has a nice finish.

The Score

In terms of ranking, this is a solid 75/100. Don’t let that score fool you, it is absolutely Sip Worthy. Of all the Bourbon’s I drink, this is one of those bottles I always have on hand and absolutely keep a few bottles in my Whiskey Safe to carry me through in the event of a natural disaster.

Whiskey Dreams – Stranahan’s

I’ve read several rave reviews of Stranahan’s Single Malt, and was looking forward to a wonderful experience drinking this American Bourbon.

Stranahan’s

This is different, it is essentially an American single malt scotch made in Colorado. The nose on this whiskey is sweet vanilla that floats on a layer of marshmallow. With its clean sweet nose this Whiskey begs to be sipped.

This is where things fell apart a little for me.

I’m not huge fan of Scotch. I don’t enjoy smoky, oily alcohol. I love bourbon and Irish Whiskey as long as they aren’t peated. I had to look up Stranahan’s Single Malt to make sure it wasn’t peated. It wasn’t. So I was surprised at how strong the burnt sugar and char notes are. Stranahan’s Single Malt has a blackened, burnt marshmallow flavor that is just a little oily, and which coats your palate. If you like Scotch, you might find this whiskey to be quite enjoyable. For me, the burnt flavor killed the experience.

Stranahan’s Single Malt is scoring a 27/100. I will finish the bottle in mixers, but I wouldn’t buy something this expensive to make Manhattan’s with.

  • The char on this whiskey is super strong. It brings up blacked, burnt marshmallows and the flavor is super clingy.

Whiskey Dreams – Clyde May’s Original Alabama Style Whiskey

Clyde May’s Original Alabama Style Whiskey hails from, you guessed it, Kentucky, New York, and maybe Alabama? According to my research this whiskey is made in Kentucky and aged for five or six years.

Made with a bourbon mashbill of 55% corn, 30% rye and 15% barley, this is aged for five to six years in charred American oak barrels. Then the Conecuh Ridge Distillery, which is in Long Island, N.Y., will process the whiskey before it moves on to Troy Alabama for bottling?

At least that is the picture I’m piecing together from multiple other bits of data. If I’ve got any of that wrong, let me know in the comments and if I can verify I’ll edit the above to be as accurate as possible.

Clyde May’s Original Alabama Style Whiskey

Now on to the whiskey.

First off, I really enjoy the nose on this Clyde May’s Original Alabama Style Whiskey. It is sweet and fruity and awash in caramel that finishes with just a touch of wood and leather. It’s not super complicated, but its simplicity really lets you appreciate what is there more.

The mouth feel is light. This is not a heavy or oily whiskey. The first two notes that hit me are that caramel and the wood char which finishes with a bit of fruitiness on the back of my tongue. Every now and then a bit of pepper creeps in, and I seem to be able to appreciate it more as I continue to sip.

Clyde May’s Original Alabama Style Whiskey scored a 71/100 for being smooth, straight forward, and easily sippable. Now I have go get a full size bottle to keep on my shelf for those times I want to enjoy a nice dram at a reasonable price, or introduce a newbie into the fold.

  • This whiskey is very true to itself. Its simple, straight forward, and everything just works. The nose is nice and gives you a good idea of what your going to be drinking. The palate is clean, smooth, sweet, and is an easier sipper.
  • At $35 this is a great value for a very sippable dram.

Cons

  • If you are new to whiskey, this might set a fishhook that is really had to pull out.
  • If your a whiskey aficionado with high brow tastes, this might not meet all your needs.

Whiskey Dreams – Winchester Extra Smooth Bourbon Whiskey

I like to try new bourbons. Sometimes I find things that surprise me by how good they are, and other times I end up with something like this Winchester Extra Smooth Bourbon which left me feeling cheated that I spent $30 dollars on it.

The first sip made my eyes go wide as the whiskey slid over my tongue and hit the back of my pallet. It feels thin and has a strange aftertaste that is hard to describe, other than it reminds of me of my days working at a chemical plant and accidentally getting a whiff of petroleum products that made your throat burn.

The distillers at Winchester Extra Smooth Bourbon pride themselves on using a purification/accelerated maturation process to remove harsh-tasting congeners from their whiskeys. The whiskey itself is aged a minimum of 6 months. Both those sentences should scare you. Whatever they did, it results in some really funky flavors.

Overall, Winchester Extra Smooth Bourbon earned its 15/100 score and I’m still shivering at the memory of the taste.

Whiskey Dreams – Stillhouse Black Bourbon

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised when I took the first sip of Stillhouse Black Bourbon. My expectations weren’t that high, as I only paid $22, so on top of being a very drinkable bourbon, it is quite affordable.

So how drinkable was it?

The nose hits you with a bit of alcohol, but it quickly mixes with wood char.

The palate starts in a very similar fashion. The alcohol burns then quickly turns to mild oak char that finishes with a touch of bitterness, astringency, and spice from the coffee ground and rye. Those coffee notes through me at first. Stillhouse Black Bourbon is “mellowed in coffee beans”, but I didn’t know that until after I’d taken the first few sips. Then it clicked, that bitterness and astringency is from the coffee.

Even though I’m giving Stillhouse Black Bourbon a 61, putting it in the Mixers or On Ice category, its already a “bottle” that I’ve bought more than once. It is perfect for mixers, and better yet, it is perfect for camping and hiking, where not having a glass bottle is a real bonus.

  • Packaged in a metal tin, which makes it perfect for camping and hiking as well as parties where you don’t want to take a glass bottle.
  • Great bang for the buck when it comes to value.

Cons

  • Some drinkers may not like the opening astringency.
  • If you like your whiskey neat, this might not be right for you. It really does need some ice or be put in a mixed drink to help smooth out the rough edges.
  • It is packaged in a squarish metal case, while being awesome, also means its hard to tell when you are almost out of Stillhouse.

Whiskey Dreams – Knob Creek Small Batch

Knob Creek Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon is produced at the Jim Beam distillery in Clermont Kentucky. Jim Beam is in turned owned by Beam Suntory of Osaka, Japan. The whiskey is aged for 9 years in white oak barrels and bottled at 100 proof.

Knob Creek Small Batch

The nose on this Knob Creek Small Batch is strong. Not in a bad way, it is just very in your face, or in your nose I guess. The first note is strong burnt marshmallow and sugar that hides faint hits of vanilla under it. Surprisingly there isn’t really a lot of alcohol on the nose, which I was expecting given that its 100 proof.

The next surprise was on the tongue. I was expecting the same strong notes from the nose to come through on the palate, but it was actually more subdued. There is brown sugar and marshmallow, and I found they did stick to my tongue. From the moment this dark Bourbon touched my tongue there is that sweetness that gets a touch of leather on the finish. I couldn’t taste any of the Vanilla though. It was hinted at on the nose, but I just couldn’t find it on the tongue.

I’m not sure if it is the proof and the sweetness that didn’t seem to work for me. While Knob Creek Small Batch is 100 proof, it wasn’t really the alcohol I didn’t like either. It was just something about how the burnt sugar stuck to my tongue. A nice long finish is awesome, but if it hangs around too long it’s not quite as enjoyable.

I did however find that a few ice cubes really helped to cut down that sweetness and helped to soften the finish. Knob Creek Small Batch earned itself a 49/100.

Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey

Clearly Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey was an attempt to compete with other flavored whiskeys. Even if technically its not even a whiskey. It’s a Liqueur because of how its created.

The nose is all sugar. Yes, it smells a bit like honey, but really all I get is sugar and alcohol.

The mouth feel isn’t much better. It is sweet, but also sticks to my tongue as if it is just a bit too much like syrup. It only gets worse on the swallow. As well as being sickly sweet it has an odd aftertaste. Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey is one of those drams that I kept licking my mouth as if I was trying to physically scrub away the flavor.

These drams are always hard to score. Instead of how much did I like it, the score becomes how much did I dislike it? It is basically a rating of how to torture me with Whiskey once the rating goes below 29. So if you want to torture me someday Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey scored a 10/100 making it just bad.

I’m not a huge fan of Flavored Whiskeys. Whiskey should taste like Whiskey as far as I’m concerned. I know the segment is expanding in lots of markets and some people love them. I’m just not one of those people. If you love Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey or other flavored whiskeys let me know int the comments and I’ll try the out.

  • Its super sweet and at only 70 proof might be good for new whiskey drinkers?
